Buying a Laptop! :D

Laptops are different! - There are different factors to consider when buying a laptop!

Here we have prepared a comprehensive list of special laptop features so that you should know about. A laptop is different from a desktop computer. It has different features and functions.

You should also know about these things because, when you go to buy a laptop if the salesman understands that you do not know much, he will try to dupe you. Knowing about these basic things, you can pretend that you are technology savvy!

Weight and size:

Weight: Most laptops weigh between 1 - 2 kgs. (Some heavier, some even lighter!) When you're buying your laptop, ask yourself if you'll be taking it outside your house often. If the answer is yes, you'll want to buy a thinner, lighter laptop that will fit into your bag or briefcase.

On the other hand, if your laptop is going to stay in your room most of the time, you might want to consider investing in a laptop that has more features; it'll be bulkier, but it will be packed with each and everything you need.

Size: The most common screen sizes on laptops are 12.1, 13.3, and 14.4 inches (although some really tiny laptops have screens that are as small as 8.4 inches). Again, a tiny screen is appropriate for frequent travelers, but it'd be ideal to have a larger screen if it’s convenient and you do not have to move around much.

Input devices:

Instead of a hand-driven mouse, laptops come with other more cumbersome "input devices" for navigating a cursor around the screen. You have to get used to them. Hard-core gaming with these devices might be a little problematic. The kinds of devices that come with laptops are:

Touchpad: A touchpad is a square-shaped surface located below the space bar of a laptop keyboard. It is touch-sensitive and you navigate the screen by moving your finger around the box, as if you were drawing. The majority of laptops have a touchpad as their input device. A touchpad can be a bit tough to get used to (you have to be careful not to let your thumb fall on it while typing, or it'll move the cursor), but they work quite nicely.

Batteries:

Batteries act like your laptops in-built UPS (Un-interrupted power supply!). You can charge your laptop and then you don’t need a plug point to use it. It will run on battery for a few hours. However, it is important that you check up how many hours your battery will run. Some batteries last long. Some don’t. You want a battery that lasts the longest and is still in your budget!

There are three main types of batteries:

Li+: Most people get Lithium-ion (Li+) batteries. These batteries range in quality; batteries with a high milliampere and high voltage measurements are best. These are generally good, safe and secure.

NiMH: If you want something cheap, a nickel metal-hydride (NiMH) battery will do. However, be aware that they'll require you to recharge them every hour or so.

NiCad: This probably won't be an option, but if a dealer does try to sell you a nickel cadmium (NiCad) battery, run away. NiCads are the worst batteries because of their requirements for constant recharging.

However, all this may not be true in the near future. Technology is changing. Things are getting better. So, if you are reading all this many years after it has been published, you might want to check up on the latest developments in the battery world.

so good luck with buying a new laptop! :D

Cell phones, CANCER & BRAIN TUMOURS!

Link for this article:
http://www.ehso.com/ehshome/cellphonecancer.php

Cell phones and cancer are in the news all the time now it seems. But almost everyone uses cell phones. All over the world, tens of millions of people are pressing them against their heads for hours every day. In the U.S. it is estimated that there were at least 100 million cell phone users, as of early 2002, and that number has continued to climb.

So what's the fuss? Is cancer caused by cell phones a serious concern, or the media's panic-du-jour?

A cell phone, and a household cordless phone, use a low level form of microwave radiation to send and receive their signals. (see "How do cell phones work" here.) Microwaves, as you know, are used to cook food. As the radiation penetrates tissue it causes it to heat.

Is this a problem for us with cell phones? That is the current debate. Let's examine the positions and the known evidence, without hype or prejudice. As always, EHSO will provide citations and links to the sources of any evidence provided, so you can verify it for yourself.
Positions, pro and con:
Cell phones are dangerous:

* They emit microwaves.
* You hold the source of the emission against your brain
* There are claims that people have had brain tumors in the exact size, shape and position as the antenna on their cell phone.

Cell phones are safe:

* Cell phones use a very, very low level of radio frequency (rf) energy - too low to cause damage.
* The type of energy emitted is non-ionizing - meaning it doesn't cause damage to chemical bonds or dna.
* Hundreds of millions of people have been using cell phones and cordless phones for years. If there were a problem, we would have seen it by now.

Studies, Facts and Evidence
What is the radiation produced by a cell phone?

Like televisions, alarm systems, computers, and all other electrical devices, Cell phones (also called mobile phones) are radio devices that use Radiofrequency (Rf) energy emit electromagnetic radiation. They operate at low power (less than 1 watt) by transmitting and receiving electromagnetic radiation in the radiofrequency (RF) end of the spectrum. Radiation which is called "ionizing" can be absorbed by tissue and break molecules apart, such as gamma rays and x-rays, are known to cause cancer. The concern is that the cell phone and it's antenna (the source of the radiation) are held close against the head)

Many experts say that no matter how near the cell phone's antenna--even if it's right up against the skull--the six-tenths of a watt (typically) of power emitted couldn't possibly affect human health.
Scientific Studies to Date

Some mobile phone users have been diagnosed with brain cancer, and many others who have not used mobile phones have gotten the disease, too. Each year in the United States, brain cancer occurs at a rate of about six new cases per 100,000 people. Among the 100 million Americans who own mobile phones, then, about 6,000 cases of brain cancer would be expected among them in a year, even if they had not used mobile phones.

Two types of studies are generally used to investigate suspected cancer causes: epidemiological studies, which look at the incidence of a disease in certain groups of people, and animal studies.

Studies in animals are easier to control, but entail complications of their own. For example, how should results obtained in rats and mice be interpreted in terms of human health risks? And how can scientists account for the fact that these studies sometimes expose animals to RF almost continuously--up to 22 hours a day--and to whole-body radiation, unlike people's head-only exposure?

While studies generally have shown no link between cell phones and brain cancer, there is some conflicting scientific evidence that may be worth additional study, according to FDA. (See "Studies"). The FDA says on their website that they are closely following ongoing research into whether there might be any association between cell phones and cancer.

There are some simple steps that cell phone users can take to reduce any remaining risk:

* First, use a headset or speakerphone mode. That moves the phone (and it's antenna) away from your head.
* Second, consider reserving the use of mobile phones for shorter conversations or when a conventional phone is not available.
* Third, the effects of cellular damage are greatest on growing, developing organisms (i.e., the young), so limit children's use of cell phones!
* Finally, in a car, use an external antenna mounted outside the vehicle to move the source of the radiation farther from you! :D

About the Internet :D

the internet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet

The Internet!

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private and public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that are linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast array of information resources and services, most notably the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail.

Most traditional communications media, such as telephone and television services, are reshaped or redefined using the technologies of the Internet, giving rise to services such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and IPTV. Newspaper publishing has been reshaped into Web sites, blogging, and web feeds. The Internet has enabled or accelerated the creation of new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking sites.

The origins of the Internet reach back to the 1960s when the United States funded research projects of its military agencies to build robust, fault-tolerant and distributed computer networks. This research and a period of civilian funding of a new U.S. backbone by the National Science Foundation spawned worldwide participation in the development of new networking technologies and led to the commercialization of an international network in the mid 1990s, and resulted in the following popularization of countless applications in virtually every aspect of modern human life. As of 2009, an estimated quarter of Earth's population uses the services of the Internet. . . . WOW! :D

Christmas.....????? ya wha???

Did you say...

...Christmas???

Roll on the 11th of December!

We have almost finished our 1st term now and I must say what an eventful term it was! I got to know so many awesome people in the last two and a half months, and I am sure in the next term that I'll get to know more, but i think you'll all agree with me when I say three weeks holiday is definitely due!! CHRISTMAS????? :P

peace out mo-fo's, have a brilliant Christmas! xxxxxx

The war of the Buttons!

caveat: this has nothing to do with the film the war of the buttons

To start off this eventful night, me and my partner in crime *cue pink panther music* stopped on the lovely Grafton street to nosey about. Sitting in a bin was the mighty dwarf king balrog, or so we thought. Eyes play the meanest tricks and it turned out to be none other than 'Jimmy', a homeless, drug addict. Suddenly things were not so funny. The two of us being psychology students decide to psycho-analyse him and to save this poor guy from himself. All he wanted was tea, looking back we should have bought him a flask of tea rather than getting him a roll and wedges, but he was withering away so we wanted to fatten him up... for the kill.

Aghast you fiend i said, as i lept towards him, a'brandishing my sword. he snorted a loud snort and dived back into his kingdom of rubbish. Sorry im getting a little carried away. that didn't actually happen. moving on swiftly, we ended up in the delightful button factory, having the craic, dancing around, then at the corner of my eye i saw him...the bouncer as slippery as a bar of soap and as cunning as one too. He caught a hold of me like a conger eel, and not a small conger, a big mean one and led us to 'the back door' which turned out to be the front door, his genius apparent.

As we walked away from the button factory we were approached by three shifty looking fools who described themselves as members of the E street gang (not knowing that the E street band is actually Bruce Springsteen's famous quintuplet) with their white Nike Airs and their 'trakkie' bottoms. As they approached us, they began to dog whistle in a way which made me wish that i had brought my pepper spray with me! Alas, we ran around the corner only to find Dublin's finest and we thought we were safe, but we were deceived! as we passed their squad car, the garda in the passenger seat asked us for a kiss. Looking back, i wish i got sick on the car, but i didn't. Stay classy Andrea, stay classy. That concluded my night, i was asleep before i hit the bed, or in my case, the floor.

Noah's Ark: part II

It's that time fo the year again, and no, I do not mean the late late toy show. God has returned to us with his mighty smiting hand so that he may smite us unbelieving sinners. These 'unclean' are habitually resident in Cork & Galway, but not the Aran Islands :) Anyway, i was pondering away this morning, and I think i hit a goldmine -

Can you imagine if old Noah had to try and build his ark today?

Ok, so first, there would be an application for planning permission. This would, without doubt be refused on a number of grounds ranging from, the windows are too big, to, i'm sorry, you just cannot build a wooden house shaped like a boat sir. Eventually, a fiber-glass design would probably pass and the building would begin!

Safety inspectors and project managers would have to be employed, as well as general labourers and of course brown envelopes to party leaders and senators (if for no other reason but for tradition) so poor Noah would probably owe millions of €'s to bankers who owe millions of €'s to other bankers, so the great ship would likely be repossessed before it ever smelled the sea.

Say however, that by some freaky fluke that all of the above was somehow averted. Can you imagine the conversation that would ensue in the RSPCA building?

Em, hello sir, I, eh, would like to capture two, of, eh, every animal, and take them with me on my boat.

We haven't got a hope!
